The Holy Bible is God's Word. Every word in the Bible is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16) and has come to us from God the Father through the Holy Spirit (Zechariah 7:12). God's Word is true (John 17:17) and reliable. His Word is alive and powerful (Hebrews 4:12) In Ephesians 6:17, we're told that the Word of God is the 'sword of the Spirit', a defensive weapon used to battle the Enemy. The Spirit also plays a role in helping us understand the scriptures. Isaiah 11:2 tells us that the Spirit gives wisdom and understanding. This is what we want! The power, understanding and wisdom of God's Word at work in us. But HOW do we do that? Well, we get the scriptures in our minds and thoughts and memory.
Here's a technique of how to do that within the One Word One Year Faith Journey: Make a Scripture Ring. Once you choose your One Word for the year, go straight to the scriptures to see where your One Word appears in the Bible. This can be done with a Bible concordance or even online in your search engine. Type in: "scriptures with the word _____." Read them and write down as many as you can find that relate to your One Word and your intentions.
When I looked up my One Word LIGHT in the Bible concordance, there were 95 verses! Whoa! Of course, some of the LIGHT scriptures didn't relate to my intentions, but I read through them all and chose my top10-20 scriptures that really piqued my interest. From there, I chose one scripture to focus on for each month of the year.
Write your scripture in your One Word One Year Faith Journey book and on an index card. Hole punch your card and place it on a metal book ring. Each month add another scripture card. Commit to reading your Scripture Ring at least once a day. (You could add this discipline to a tracker to create a habit.) Read it aloud. Read it silently. Write it on sticky notes and place the scripture around your home. Journal about your scripture. What does it mean? What does it promise? How can its truth comfort or empower you? Can it be used in a prayer back to God?
Your familiarity with the scriptures CAN significantly impact your life. This is the Holy Word of the Lord Almighty! There is power in His Word. There is light and love and healing in His Word. Allow the Spirit to move within your thinking and being as you say aloud your scriptures. He will act when we call on His Holy Word. Trust Him. Believe Him and live your life on His leading. Let's do this!
